Statement: The City of Harper, Kansas seeks to hire a new Chief of Police. Harper is located in southcentral Kansas approximately 45 miles SW of Wichita, KS.

Under the direction of the City Administrator, the Chief of Police oversees and provides for the service and protection of the citizens of Harper. This position performs administrative and managerial duties in the enforcement of federal, state and local laws and ordinances. Supervising two full time police officers, and one part-time officer, preparing the department’s annual budget and resolving personnel issues and citizen concerns are the primary responsibilities of this position. The successful candidate will possess excellent supervisory, managerial, organizational, communication and public relation skills.

Salary Benefits: Starting salary range for this position is $51,000. Benefits include health, dental and life insurance; KPERS retirement and deferred compensation options; paid vacation, sick and funeral leave.

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma or GED and a technical degree or some college credit in Criminal Justice or related field is required. A minimum of five years of law enforcement experience is required (10 years preferred), current KLETC certification, and valid driver’s license. The successful candidate must be able to pass a physical exam and background check after an offer of employment has been made. Residency within the city limits is required within 6 months of employment.
