JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for enforcing the laws of the United States of America, the State of Kansas, and Allen County. Under the direct supervision of the Sheriff or Undersheriff, this non-exempt position performs tasks involving maintaining order and protecting life and property by enforcing local, state, or federal laws and ordinances. Performs a combination of the following duties: patrols within the limits of Allen County; directs traffic; issues traffic summonses; investigates accidents; apprehends and arrests suspects, serves legal processes of courts, appears in court to testify on cases, and assists with guarding and transporting inmates. Interacts with people to provide information in response to service inquiries and to handle and resolve any issues while delivering the highest level of service to Allen County, others, and other departments or agencies. Follows policies and procedures when carrying out assignments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs specialized duties of Patrol Seargent.
- Assists Deputies with technology equipment and set-up.
- Supervises Deputies on shifts and helps with evaluations.
- Participates in community involvement in public service outside the Sheriff's office, including in organizations or community functions.
- Provides leadership and training in one or more specific categories that benefit the agency, such as Investigation, Interview and Interrogation techniques, Child victim investigations, Evidence custody and security, DUI investigations, Traffic accident investigations, Narcotic investigations, Leadership or management skills, and any other training or experience that in the judgment of the Sheriff meets this requirement.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
- Assures schedule coverage as needed.
- Assists with other duties as may be directed.
- May be assigned to assist in the detention of inmates at the jail.
- May be assigned special duty as a firearms trainer for all certified officers.
- May be assigned special duty as field officer trainer for new officers.
- May be assigned special duty with drug enforcement.
- May be assigned special duty to maintain public communication and information via social media, web pages, and other public communication tools.
- May be assigned special duty by the Sheriff for the benefit of the department.
- Performs other related duties as required.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include directing subordinates, including supervisors and front-line employees, through training, assigning, directing, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or four to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
