04/09/2018 - Police Chief (Kiowa, KS)

The City of Kiowa, Kansas (pop. 1026) is accepting applications for the full-time position of Police Chief. Our mission is to provide the highest quality of police services to our citizens and visitors to Kiowa. The Police Chief performs a variety of routine and complex police work in the administration of the police department. In addition to assigning, directing and reviewing the activities of all city law enforcement personnel, they must also be able to work in close concert with the Barber County Attorney and Sheriff’s Office. This employee may assume command of the department and will have excellent communication, organizational, supervisory, reasoning and public relation skills.

The ideal police chief will have demonstrated leadership experience, tactical competence, a proven work ethic and be responsible for directing all activities of the police department. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, or related fields is strongly desired.  Kansas full-time certification is preferred.   

Work experience should include five years in police work and two years in a supervisory position. The candidate should be in possession of or be able to obtain appropriate certification as a police officer in the State of Kansas. The successful applicant must complete a background check, psychological evaluation, medical exam, drug screen and pass the interview process.

Salary range is $41,000 - $46,000. The position is FLSA exempt and reports to the City Administrator. The city benefit package consists of health (city pays the first $1,000 of the deductible), retirement, life insurance, vacation, holidays, and sick leave. The job also requires living in the city limits.
